It’s a family showdown.
As “Yellowstone” winds down into its ending, there’s been a lot of drama both in front of the camera and behind it.
“You get this really juicy drama, everyone is fighting for their team,” series star Luke Grimes, 39, said in a newly revealed featurette clip on ET.
This applies to the various factions of the Dutton ranching family on the hit Paramount show — which consists of patriarch John Dutton (Kevin Costner) and his adult kids, Kayce (Grimes), Jamie (Wes Bentley), Beth (Kelly Reilly) and John’s son-in-law, Rip (Cole Hauser).
But it might also relate to the reportedly behind-the-scenes drama between Costner, 68, and showrunner Taylor Sheridan, 52.
For the past few months, rumors have flown about a feud between the showrunner and star. Initially, it was reported that Costner refused to be on-set for long while filming the second half of Season 5, which caused uncertainty about when filming would resume.
However, Costner’s attorney called that allegation an “absolute lie” —and Costner’s wife Christine Baumgartner recently filed for divorce after 18 years together. It’s been reported that Baumgartner, 49, was “unhappy” with his work schedule.
“During filming, Kevin is not around very much. His absence has been very hard for her,” a source told People.
So, that would cast doubt on the claim that Costner refused to spend much time on set.
A different source alleged that Costner and Sheridan had a falling out due to Sheridan having a “God complex.” They said that Costner, who is also an executive producer, felt dismissed when he raised creative concerns.
“Only Taylor truly knows what is going on,” a source told The Post. “Taylor spent years not being truly appreciated in Hollywood, and now that he’s the top of the heap, there’s definitely some ego to all of this.”
The Wall Street Journal also reported that Sheridan has been frustrating the network and studio with his “ridiculous spending.”
“Love and family and serve your tribe, your people — that’s a huge theme in the show,” Grimes said in the new featurette.
“It’s just a bunch of people trying to figure out how to do what’s best for their own.”
According to all of these rumors and behind-the-scenes reports, everybody on set is also fighting for “their own.”
However, it hasn’t negatively impacted the show’s audience, as Paramount reports that 17 million people have tuned into the fifth and final season, so far.
The second half of “Yellowstone” Season 5 will premiere in November, and that will be the ending of the current version of the show.
However, the Duttons story isn’t over. It will be immediately followed by a “sequel” series premiering in December.
The cast, title and plot are currently under wraps, but it’s likely that “Yellowstone” cast members will be on the next show, sans Costner, and joined by additional star Matthew McConaughey.
