Talk about fowl play.
Cops busted an illegal cock-fighting operation in Southern California, arresting two men, detaining nearly three dozen spectators and seizing hundreds of roosters, weapons and cash, authorities said.
Jose Adame, 33, and Carlos Romero, 35, were arrested Sunday morning after cops responded to the 32000 block of Avenue E in Yucaipa to investigate reports of the blood sport occurring at the property, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
Police also detained 33 people at the property where about 50 vehicles were parked outside — many of them fleeing as authorities arrived.
Authorities seized 250 roosters, a fighting ring with a scoreboard, about 24 firearms from a large safe and steel talons — typically placed on the bird’s claw during fights, cops said.
Officials with animal control also recovered approximately 17 dead roosters, eight live ones and tagged 61 boxed roosters, said police, who also red-tagged several buildings on the property including a trailer.
Adame, who was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, cruelty to animals and failure to yield, was nabbed by police after he allegedly attempted to escape from the property and plow into a patrol unit, narrowly missing a deputy who then initiated a pursuit, police said.
Three live roosters were found inside the rear cargo area of his car, which was later impounded. Three passengers were also taken into custody, police said.
A police aerial unit located Romero hiding inside his truck with seven live roosters kept in boxes, a large sum of money and a semi-automatic handgun hidden in the vehicle.
He is charged with animal cruelty and gun possession, police said.
Both men were booked at Central Detention Center in San Bernardino.
