A pregnant Georgia mother who cops say killed her 1-year-old son was caught and taken into custody in upstate New York over the weekend after two weeks on the run.
Gloria Wright, 23, was tracked down to Rochester and arrested by US Marshals on Saturday, officials with the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia said in a statement.
Wright was wanted for first-degree murder and first-degree cruelty to children after authorities found her 1-year-old son not breathing in their Georgia home on Jan. 8, according to the sheriff’s office.
First responders were called to the house and attempted to resuscitate the child, who unfortunately died at a hospital.
Authorities had interviewed Wright on the day of her son’s death but were unable to locate her afterward. It wasn’t until after that the child’s death was ruled a homicide, WSBTV reported.
“We have a small child that has lost its life in the hands of its mother and we would like to get this mother in custody because she is currently carrying another child right now, so we would like to get her in custody for her safety and for the safety of that child,” Rockdale County Sheriff’s investigator Grote Levett told the station before Wright’s arrest.
Authorities did not share details about the nearly 2-week-long manhunt for Wright but had been offering a $5,000 reward for information about her whereabouts.
It was not immediately clear if she would be extradited to Rockdale County.
