NY Rep. Ritchie Torres hits out at Gov. Hochul on ghost gun loopholes after CEO’s killing

Bronx Rep. Ritchie Torres urged Gov. Kathy Hochul to get rid of ghost gun loopholes in New York state law in the wake of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson’s cold-blooded killing.

In a letter fired off to Hochul Wednesday and obtained by The Post, the Democrat called for a “complete and comprehensive prohibition of ghost guns” across New York after Luigi Mangione allegedly used one to murder the executive on Dec. 4.

“State law contains two loopholes that must be closed,” Torres wrote as he called on the governor to include new legislation in her upcoming executive budget proposal.

“First, the law prohibits the possession, sale, and transfer of ghost guns but fails to criminalize the manufacturing of a 3D-printed ghost gun.”

“Second, the law prohibits the manufacturing of assault rifles, high-capacity magazines, and machine guns but the prohibition of gun manufacturing fails to include 3D-printed ghost guns,” he added.

It comes after cops said Mangione, a 26-year-old Ivy League grad, allegedly used what appeared to be a 3D-printed ghost gun when he allegedly fatally shot Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel.

The accused killer picked up the 3D-printing hobby while studying at the University of Pennsylvania, a former pal previously told The Post.

“Anyone anywhere can readily purchase a ghost gun kit and assemble the gun components into fully functional firearms. Anyone anywhere can purchase a 3-D printer for a few hundred dollars online,” Torres said in his letter to Hochul.

“The technology of 3D-printing can turn every New York home into a gun factory and every New Yorker into a gun manufacturer.”

“I am respectfully calling upon you as governor to include in your executive budget proposal legislation that closes the manufacturing loophole in ghost gun laws and closes the ghost gun loophole in gun manufacturing laws,” he continued.

“No stone can be left unturned in the New York’s fight against gun violence, which has been compounded by the proliferation of privately made firearms.”
