Mississippi teacher who fed students dog food she thought was beef jerky ousted from job

A Mississippi teacher is in the dog house after unwittingly serving nearly a dozen students beef-flavored dog treats during a classroom party — and sending one child to the hospital.  

The faux pas cost the Calhoun City High School educator her job after eight students took at least one bite of the pet food she mistook for beef jerky, WTVA reported. 

At least one student who nibbled on the dog treat was sent to the hospital with a stomachache, according to Calhoun County School District Superintendent Dr. Lisa Langford. 

“I don’t want to believe that anybody would do anything like that to kids, but it’s hard to believe that you didn’t notice a dog on the pack, and it says ‘dog jerky’ on the pack,” mother Atlantis Whaley said after taking her son to get treated.

The other students were treated by the school nurse, who swiftly contacted Poison Control and alerted the affected children’s parents, following the blunder, the local outlet reported.

The incident happened last week during a birthday celebration for several students.

The superintendent confirmed the teacher is no longer employed, but didn’t specify if she was fired.

School officials did identify the teacher.
